2018 Mid-Atlantic United States Wishlist
After the Glen Onoko planning fail, I decided it was time to make a master list of all the places within a 4-5 hour drive radius that I want to visit this year.
What qualifies something to be on this list? It has to promise something gorgeous to look at. That's it. I'm up for even a very rigorous hike if there's an amazing overlook or stunning waterfall--but I'd rather stay home if it's going to be a meh kind of view.
I'm a person who doesn't love to get up off the couch--but once I'm out the door and on an adventure, I'm thrilled to be there.
Having a checklist of places to hit before this next winter comes will (hopefully) motivate me to get outside and explore glorious places.
I'm an adjunct professor, and this semester and during the summer I'll have 3-day weekends. I often fill my days off with side hustle work, but hopefully I'll be able to put some of those long weekends to good use.
To give things some structure, I've organized my list into two categories: Definitely and Hopefully. My goal is to see everything on my Definitely list and as much of the rest as possible.
I'll come back in and link to posts about each destination as I complete them, so check back!
Cherry Springs State Park in Coudersport, Pennsylvania (about 5 hours away), stop at Pine Creek Gorge (Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania) and Lebo Vista in Watson Township, PA along the way; possibly also stop at Loyalsock Canyon Vista in Forks Township, PA or Kinzua Bridge State Park/Viaduct in Mt. Jewett, PA.
Assateague Island in Maryland (about 3 hours away + a ferry)
Buttermilk Falls and the section of the Appalachian Trail right beyond it in Layton, NJ (about 3 hours away)
High Point State Park in Sussex, NJ (about 2.5 hours away)
Cape May Point State Park in Cape May, NJ (about 1.5 hours away)
Apple Pie Hill Fire Tower in Wharton State Park (the tower isn't always open/accessible though) (less than 1 hour away)
Paterson Great Falls National Park in Paterson, NJ (also stop at Lambert's Castle) (2 hours away)
April 6: Branch Brook Park the day before the Cherry Blossom Festival (less crowded!) in Newark, NJ (2 hours away)
In the autumn: cranberry harvest in Burlington County (less than 1 hour away)
St. Hubert's Chapel on Chapel Island in the Smoke Rise community of Kinnelon, NJ (2 hours away, combine with Cherry Blossom trip?)
Duke Farms in Hillsborough, NJ (1.5 hours away)
Mt. Tammany Red Dot Trail + Kittatinny Point (2.5 hours away)
Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve in New Hope, PA (1 hour away)
The Pinnacle and Pulpit Rock near Hamburg, PA (2 hours away)
This is a pretty ambitious list for me, but let's see how much of it I can tackle!
